Janet Swain has recently arrived in Kuwait, after living in Singapore for three years. She has now set up the Kuwait branch of “nůmama“, a singing group for women with babies and small children. An interesting concept indeed, check it out!

What is ”nůmama” all about?

From www.numamachoir.com

“nůmama” is a an opportunity for women to unite, share and escape reality for just 60 minutes each week by singing. The sisterhood element is borne out in its name: the “mama” is self- explanatory but the “nu” adds that extra dimension of young motherhood – both before and after the birth of a child. But, “mamas” of all ages are welcomed into the group as mentors and supporters of the young mothers.

nůmama started its life back in the summer of 2009 by two young and displaced British mums in Singapore who discovered that they shared something in common beyond a dislike of dirty nappies and sleepless nights and that was a love of singing. Neither claims to be a wonderful singer but they realized (correctly) that singing with a group gave them a “buzz” like no other activity – AND it was something which, if done during the day, they could take their babies along to.

Women who have joined nůmama find the music we sing a refreshing break from the child-focused nursery rhymes that are encountered in conventional mother and child music classes. nůmama turns this concept on its head, serving the needs of the mother “first” by choosing music more complex and challenging than Baa Baa Black Sheep but still entertaining the babies, who have a room full of toys and rhythmic, energised, happy and harmonising mums to keep them happy. In this way nůmama very much subscribes to the philosophy “happy mummy, happy baby”, and by giving mums an hour a week to sing their hearts out, it hopes to give them an oasis of creative space so that they can return to the real world refreshed!
