Pitch Block are David V. Pagtakhan, Criselda Calabia, Karen Kae D.Almariego, Bullet Bautista Alamo, Kevin James D. Ticzon, Ronnie M. Precilla, Paulo B. Recto, Jonathan B. Magpantay. Yep – certainly a mouthful.

I first encountered them at Bahrain’s Zuzu Club -  a small but snazzy little joint full of the right kind of lights and minimalistic seating arrangements  (but sadly, very weak cocktails!) Everyone was polite from reception to the super sweet waitresses.

Pitch Block pretty much blew me away from the instant they began. Aside from looking terrific as performers, these smartly-dressed guys and gorgeous ladies are phenomenally talented. Each singer delivered such powerful and hard hitting vocals and every instrumentalist seemed to be a virtuoso in his own right. Even better, as a team they are a musical powerhouse. I couldn’t decide who my favourites were or which number they pulled off the best.  Their versatility had them covering everything from Rihanna and R Kelly to Creed and Rage against the Machine. Even on a night when the crowd could have been counted on two hands, they played like it was a full house – brimming with energy and stage presence – total professionalism.

I managed to have a quick chat with front liner Dave, a down-to-earth and really nice guy – and asked if I could grab the band for a quick interview the next day. He was happy to set it up for me. Check out what they had to say, (along with some GREAT music)  in the video! As always, make sure you wait to be able to view it at a higher quality. It’s worth it.

The members of Pitch Block are seasoned musicians with plenty of individual musical history, playing in different places like Malaysia, China and of course the Philippines. Bahrain, they say, is not hugely different from home when it comes to being a musician. Culturally, the importance given to music and even the quality of the audience, are similar. Must be that laid back Island mentality!

For us from Kuwait, Music even FEELS different in Bahrain. There’s an air of  joy, passion and a striving for  excellence. Sure there are the seedy bars which are always jam packed with overly-testosterone driven members of the military – places I like to stay the hell away from. But Zuzu club is free of that atmosphere. And like Pinoy bands in Kuwait, Pitch Block are clearly passionate about their music – talking about ‘heart’ and ‘never giving up’. After playing three covers that I’d requested, band leader Kevin (who I really enjoyed talking with one-on-one)  asked why I didn’t just move to Bahrain?

Good question. In Bahrain, you do what you want. If you love music, you play music. Sure money is important but if music makes you happy, money doesn’t come first. Filipino communities have proven that to us over and over again.

So can I just leave and do what I love doing – in Bahrain? Let’s see…

The Disappearing Bassist

If musicians in Kuwait ever wondered about ditching it all and seeking out happiness via music – be sure to grab some inspiration from Pitch Block on your next trip to Bahrain. They’ll be at the Casablanca Hotel’s Zuzu Club  in Gudaibiya, every night till Ramadan.

Just down the street there are bigger parties with louder crowds, and if that’s what you want then have a blast. But if you want quality music that makes you want to sing along till your lungs burst, the phenomenal performers of Pitch Block will breathe the life back into you! That’s what they did for me.

Grease is the word !

The Kuwait Little Theater has been putting up fabulous musicals for years and the upcoming  Grease is the word, a musical based on the 1978 cult movie ‘Grease’, is sure to be a standout hit!

KLT regulars including Gregory Dunlop (Danny), Jemma Standen (Marty), Karen Siemers (Rizzo) and KLT returnee Tamara Quaddoumi (Sandy) are involved in this fantastically fun production.

The KM compilation CD is going into production.

A few weeks ago we posted about the possibility of a local band having their band pic on the cover of the Kuwait Music Compilation CD. Please note that all local bands/ DJ’s/ Artists are eligible for the spot, not just the ones whose music was chosen to go on the CD.

We are updating this post because we’d like anyone who hasn’t seen this post to submit their band pics for consideration to be on the cover of the compilation CD.  The compilation CD launch is just around the corner! We are finally making progress and we do not want to have a generic image on the cover. Instead, we’d like to have your pic on it!

 Rules for submission

We will pick the best picture from the submissions that we feel suits the design of the CD, so make sure you submit a pic that goes well with the above design. Please note that ANY band, artist, DJ or performer can submit their pic. 

To submit your pic, send in a high resolution jpg (min. 3000 x 3000 pixels) in dimensions to caesar@kuwait-music.com. 

Pictures that are low in resolution will automatically be removed from the list for consideration.

Important : band logo or names must NOT be included on the pic . Those pictures with logos or references to band names, will not be considered.
