Women and mall guitarists

Blog mallguitarist

If you’re like me and frequent the malls often, you’ll surely have come across “Mall guitarists“, or “Mall guitar carrying artists” may be more accurate. They’re the denim-tighter-than slacks, hairdos-weirder-than-cockatoos, 5-guys-in-a-bunch, types.

So here’s my question: If they’ve got guitars on their backs and are obviously not legally allowed to play in the mall, why are they carrying them around? What’s even funnier is the manner in which they are carried. Sometimes you can just tell an actual musician from a wannabe.

Do women at malls really dig this? Some “cool” people, please enlighten me.

  1. I was going to comment on this on my phone, but it’s acting funny. Either way, I’ll keep it short.

I’ve seen plenty of those ‘mall guitar carrying artists’ as you so cleverly called them, and well as far as I’m aware, I’ve seen a lot of them playing at the beach/crescent side. For the most part, a lot of them wouldn’t know a string from a strap if it got up and gave them a haircut, however that being said I have heard some really cool spanish music and some somewhat tolerable arabic music (though I’ve never been a fan).

As far as walking around the mall, I don’t know. One would think it’s all about the image, that maybe a guy with a stupid haircut carrying a guitar might get all the girls and that will continue to be my assumption until I actually see that person play.

I don’t think there’s a point to it really, if you wanna play guitar, then go ahead and play it, don’t just walk around without purpose just for the sake of showing us that you happen to own one…

    That’s all I got..

Why would people do anything besides try to get attention?

In Kuwait, as I am sure it is obvious, there is no real place to socialize and meet people of the opposite gender. So all you have are places that both sexes can congregate, and at that point they need something to draw attention to themselves. Are they musicians? Most probably not. Are they hurting music? Not unless the musicians in Kuwait are so awful that the mere sight of someone at a mall is enough to harm the music culture.

Is it sad? Sure. Not in relation to music, but the fact that it is so difficult for girls to meet boys and vice versa that it gets to the point where you have to have something ridiculous (Garish clothing, 2 gallons of perfume or cologne, a kilo of makeup, some weird accessories that you don’t even know how to use).

In the end, is it hurting anyone? I think not. It may look silly. But there are a lot worse things that people could be doing, and this seems very low on the list.
